A newly developed grade of Appeel® from DuPont is being supplied to produce a tamper-evident lidding film for one of Italy's top ice cream manufacturers.

New adhesive resin provides superior safety and processing characteristics

Application Description

Designated Appeel® 11D554, the new adhesive resin provides superior safety and processing characteristics compared with other resins. It also offers a reliable, peelable seal for use on a variety of containers including those produced in PS, PP, PET and PVC. The material offers a broad temperature sealing window, excellent hot-tack and good organoleptics.

In addition, because of the ease and reliability of processing, converting lines can run continuously, avoiding flow breakdowns. The tamper-evident film developed by Cellografica Gerosa for the polypropylene container of Sammontana ice cream, consists of a biaxially-orientated PET layer sandwich-printed and then laminated to a peelable sealing layer of DuPont™ Appeel® 11D554 adhesive resin.

This multilayer structure takes full advantage of the benefits provided by the new grade of Appeel® , a modified ethylene copolymer resin specially developed to be used as a sealing layer for peelable lidding applications on PS, PP, PET and PVC containers, cups or trays.

"The versatility of this adhesive resin is really significant and translates into important advantages for both converters and users" explains Dr. Castagna, Gerosa Group's research and development manager. The versatility of the new film means that converters can manage stocks more easily, as the same material can be used for different container applications.

"Good processibility on the converting line is another important benefit provided by Appeel® ", continued Castagna, "In the past we have used some blends with high EVA content and this caused, particularly in the summer, blocking of the lines delaying the manufacturing process".

Combined with the right additive, Appeel® resin has a low coefficient of friction and, therefore, can be used in cast and blown film processes as well as in extrusion coating.

In addition to having superior transparency, Appeel® has a broad sealing temperature window, a property that ensures consistency of peel strength even when there are temperature fluctuations of the sealing bar. The excellent hot tack of the resin is a further benefit for this particular application as it ensures that the lid cannot be displaced from the rim.

DuPont™ Appeel® does not affect the taste of sensitive products even after prolonged contact, this is why the material has been selected for the lid seal on mineral water cups.

Cellografica Gerosa is part of the Gerosa Group and has production facilities and sales offices in Italy, France, Spain and Germany.
