Case Study: Teleflex Mets General Motors’ Requirements for its Ethanol-Fueled Light Truck Hoses Using Teflon®
Teflon® fluoropolymer enables Fluoro-Comp® fuel hoses to provide near-zero permeation and a life span of greater than 15 years.
Application Description
DuPont is assisting automotive OEMs and suppliers to comply with emission standards through innovative use of materials. Fluoro-Comp® fuel hose, produced by Teleflex Fluid Systems, is built with a composite of fiberglass and DuPont Teflon® fluoropolymer to reduce emissions.
Materials Selected and Why
DuPont Teflon® fluoropolymer was chosen for its:
- Chemical, pressure and temperature resistance properties
- Resistance to thermal shock
- Near-zero permeation with any fuel
DuPont Teflon® fluoropolymer is one of the most chemically inert polymers. It ensures the fuel hose will not degrade over time. Teflon® is 100 times less permeable than nylon and 1,000 times less permeable than rubber.
The composite of fiberglass and DuPont Teflon® fluoropolymer provides near-zero permeation and a life span of greater than 15 years.
