Case Study: BMW 7 Series Model Offers Security Sidelites of  DuPont™ SentryGlas® Plus

BMW is the first automotive manufacturer to offer intrusion-resistant glazing with DuPont™ SentryGlas® Plus ionoplast interlayer.

Application Description

BMW becomes the first company in the world to incorporate Pilkington’s new Intrusion Resistant Glazing based on SentryGlas® Plus ionoplast interlayer. The enhanced security glazing is available as an option on the new BMW 7 Series and has been available since March 2002.

SentryGlas® Plus is widely usedin hurricane-proofing and security architectural glass applications. Working collaboratively with DuPont, Pilkington was able to transfer the technology for use in automotive glazing

Materials Selected and Why

SentryGlas® Plus was chosen because it offers the best balance of thickness and intrusion resistance.

BMW’s new ionoplast interlayer security solution reduces the total side window glass construction thickness to 5.6 mm, compared to 9 mm with a polycarbonate solution.

The SentryGlas® Plus ionoplast interlayer offers five times the strength and 100 times the rigidity of polyvinyl butyral interlayer (PVB), traditionally used for automotive laminated safety glass.

Benefits Gained

  • Improved resistance to breakage and intrusion
  • A thinner, more lightweight glazing
  • Glass-on-glass solution means the enhanced security benefits are “invisible” to both car occupants and potential thieves
  • Permits new side window glazing construction use in standard door and sealing systems
