Case Study: Tyvek® HL Keeps Automotive Parts Brand New During Shipping and Storage

The unique multi-layer construction of DuPont™ Tyvek® HL effectively cushions and protects painted and plastic Class A surfaces.

Application Description

There is nothing that wastes more time and money than the repair or rework of brand new parts. Whether parts are damaged en route to the assembly plant, or in storage, even a tiny nick can have costly repercussions. DuPont has an answer to this problem in an innovative new material – DuPont™ Tyvek® HL.

Materials Selected and Why

Tyvek® HL is a multi-layer material, featuring two outside layers of durable Tyvek® and a middle layer of high-loft cushion.

Covers made from Tyvek® HL protect any painted or plastic Class A surface, including bumper fascias, rocker panels, consoles and trim pieces.  They resist tears, punctures and abrasions and are water-resistant and lightweight.

Tyvek® HL’s protective qualities also are used for products ranging from protective apparel for workers in auto paint shops to the popular FedEx® Pak envelope.

Benefits Gained

  • Parts are cushioned during storage and shipping
  • 98% of dust particles, as small as two microns are filtered out
  • May be put on shortly after painting  because offgassing vapors pass right through the breathable DuPont™ Tyvek® ,which prevents ghosting from occurring
