Case Study: Rugged Zytel® Water Pump Impellers Cut Cost
Zytel® HTN withstands rugged handling and harsh conditions, while saving money versus metal parts.
Application Description
After rigorous evaluation and testing, a leading manufacturer of automotive water pumps in South America has adopted glass-reinforced DuPont™ Zytel® HTN for impellers for a number of its aftermarket models.
The parts were formerly made of cast iron, aluminum or glass-reinforced PA66. Technicians tested impellers molded from Zytel® HTN for more than 1,000 hours using standard automotive coolant at temperature conditions matching actual use. Service temperatures typically range from 110°C to 115°C with peaks of 130°C.
Materials Selected and Why
Zytel® HTN meets requirements for:
- Toughness
- Low warpage
- Retention of properties in continuous contact with hot automotive coolant
Benefits Gained
- Save cost – Impellers molded from Zytel® HTN cost less to manufacture than metal parts. Unlike metal, the molded parts require no secondary finishing operations, and injection molds cost less than metal-casting tools.
- Reduce weight – The Zytel® HTN impellers weigh much less than metal parts.
- Withstand rugged handling – The impellers made of Zytel® HTN have proven highly resistant to damage during shipping and assembly.
