Case Study:  DuPontTM SupraShield® coating system – a premium DuPont finish

Introducing a new DuPont finish that will better withstand the test of time – and car washes.

Application Description

Have you wished that your new vehicle could stay new looking longer with that glossy “wet look” that turns heads and prompts valet attendants to park you up front?  Until now, that proud, new ownership experience was too often marred by fine swirl marks from cleaning or surface dulling and clouding from exposure to the elements. Today, Ford Motor Company offers a unique, premium paint job that will resist scratching and mars longer than the finish on any other vehicle in the parking lot.

Materials Selected and Why

Ford achieves this finish with DuPont SupraShield® coating system, including primers and color basecoats that are matched to a unique final surface clear coat.  The new DuPont finish system represents “best-in-class” technology that resists scratching from hand or automatic car washes and from everyday exposure to road and air-borne grime and pollutants.

DuPont SupraShield® patented technology provides a significant improvement in the ability of the clearcoat to resist scratching without sacrificing other important attributes, such as keeping its reflective brilliance when exposed to air pollution.  In laboratory tests that measured the amount of gloss retained on a test panel after rubbing it with an abrasive slurry, a properly cured SupraShield®  clearcoat retained more than 90% of its initial gloss.
