Case Study: Hitachi selects NOMEX® thermal insulation for alternators
Hitachi Automotive Products Division succeeded in reducing energy required to produce alternators by using NOMEX® instead of epoxy powder coating for electrical insulation.
Application Description
Until recently, epoxy powder coating has been widely used as electrical insulation for automotive electrical components, including alternator stator insulation. Epoxy coating of stators requires significant process energy due to the thermoset nature of the epoxies.
Hitachi Ltd. Automotive Products Div. succeeded in reducing energy consumption required for alternator production by selecting DuPont™ NOMEX® brand paper instead of epoxy.
Materials Selected and Why
NOMEX® brand paper allows Hitachi to avoid the curing process of epoxy stator coating.
Benefits Gained
- Reduced energy consumption – Hitachi reduced its electric consumption to one-seventh of old levels (16% of original).
- Better insulation uniformity
- Higher productivity – The NOMEX® solution reduced process time and increased material yield.
- Cleaner work environment – By eliminating the epoxy powder coating, Hitachi’s work area has become dust-free.
