Automating Accident Avoidance

Today’s automotive engineers are rising to the challenge of reducing the number of collisions by introducing advanced safety systems that sense impending danger – such as a collision or a potential rollover – and alert the driver through new display technologies and head-up displays that DuPont enables.

Future systems being developed by market leaders today combine this sensor technology with  “x-by-wire” systems that use electronics to control braking, steering, suspension and vehicle control systems – even to sense a pedestrian or animal in your path.  This combination introduces the powerful opportunity to create automatic collision-avoidance systems that will greatly increase the safety of our roadways.

More Miracles of Science™

These exciting developments present challenges to automotive engineers – challenges that DuPont helps its customers rise to every day.

For example, today’s automotive control networks are critical to countering the weight, space and reliability problems of large amounts of discrete wiring.  However, under-the-hood, on-engine and wheel placement present harsh environmental challenges for the materials used in these controllers.   DuPont helps its customers overcome these issues with:

Green Tape™ microcircuit ceramics – well suited to harsh environments including thermal cycle, vibration, shock, exposure to dirt and contaminants, moisture, chemicals and gases.
Fodel® conductor for high definition electronics
Kapton® polyimide film for heat-resistant control module
