DuPont was a pioneer in the airbag industry, developing the first airbag nylon 6,6 fiber as well as engineering plastics for seat belt mechanisms. We have been working side-by-side with our customers in developing new airbag applications such as side, thorax, knee and curtain systems. DuPont Hytrel® TEEE has 12 years’ history of proven reliability in airbag doors and is now being considered for inflatable seat cushion risers and inflatable floor mats to protect occupants from whiplash and lower extremity injuries.
Making Adaptive Technology a Reality
Seat belt and airbag systems can now be designed to provide maximum protection by tailoring their performance based on the crash severity, the size and position of the occupant. These adaptive airbag systems are made possible by the use of electronic sensors made with DuPont electronic materials technologies.
DuPont Green Tape™ ceramic technologies and DuPont™ Teijin PEN film bring miniaturization and performance robustness to crash and occupant sensors and the circuitry for the control modules. Kapton® polyimide film also is used in production of electronic control modules due to its superior flame and heat resistance.
