R-134a is an HFC, or Hydrofluorocarbon. It is a non-ozone depleting refrigerant used in motor vehicle AC systems.  DuPont’s brand name is Suva®, and the product is produced in the world’s largest R-134a plant in Corpus Christi, Texas, as well as in Chiba, Japan. It is globally available through DuPont’s extensive distribution channels.

R-134a was globally adopted by all vehicle manufacturers in the early 1990s as a replacement for CFC-12. The transition to R-134a was completed by the mid-1990s for most major manufacturers.  Today, over 250 million cars use R-134a in their AC systems, providing safety and comfort.

General Use Description

Today’s AC systems use the vapor compression cycle to provide cooling and dehumidification of air as it flows into the passenger compartment. The major system components are the compressor – the “heart” of the system, condenser, evaporator, drier and connecting hoses and tubing. In addition to the refrigerant, polyalkylene glycol is required to lubricate the moving parts in the compressor. The R-134a and a small amount of lubricant flow together through the system. Heat is removed from the air in the evaporator and rejected to the outside by the condenser.

DuPont’s Corpus Christi plant

DuPont’s Corpus Christi plant is a sophisticated fluorochemical plant that utilizes very modern and complex technology. DuPont has owned the plant since initial construction began in 1971. The initial small-scale HFC-134a facility started up in December 1990 to provide material for testing. The larger, world-scale facility started up in September 1993. The plant achieved ISO-9002 registration in 1992, and registration to the QS-9000 requirements was achieved in 1997.   Current plans are to achieve registration to the ISO-14000 requirements by year-end 2003.

The plant is driven toward the goal of "zero emissions.”   This site is a charter member of “Clean Texas” and is actively involved in various waste minimization efforts. The site maintains an excellent relationship with all regulatory agencies. For EPA's Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) listed chemicals, the site has reduced emissions for all TRI chemicals by 50% over the past 10 years. The site's overall emissions reduction plan is to first recover, recycle and reclaim streams and vents through state-of-the-art engineering practices and technologies.

The plant has participated in the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program and has been certified as a STAR site since February 1984. The site is one of only a handful to have received its fifth consecutive re-certification following an inspection in August 2001.

Safety information concerning the plant is shared with the Local Emergency Planning Commission (LEPC) and Citizens Advisory Panel.

Fluorochemical Enhanced Bulk Storage and Handling

DuPont can provide assistance with assembly plant bulk storage systems designed exclusively for fluorochemicals.

General Description:

Dual pumps, piping and associated electrical equipment are mounted on the tank supporting steel framework.  The pump suction and discharge piping is welded/flanged construction to minimize emissions from threaded connections. The liquid and vapor fill lines are equipped with the DuPont Fluorochemical Emission Elimination Delivery (FEED) system to prevent emissions during bulk deliveries.  The system is assembled prior to delivery and the tank is pressurized to approximately 3 psig with dry nitrogen.  Electrical service and piping to the process are to be connected by the customer.  This system is equipped for non-flammable service only.
