Electric Compressor Provides Many Advantages

The increasing electric power capabilities of 21st century vehicles will make possible the use of electric compressors in air conditioning systems

No longer connected to the engine by pulleys and belts, motors for electric compressor units can be located in the trunk or in wheel wells, for example, to provide better load distribution and functionality. A scroll compressor, like those used in industrial/consumer air conditioning systems, will be at the heart of the electric climate control systems.

Challenge and Opportunity

The switch to electric compressors also will lead to significant changes in refrigerants used, evaporator and condensor constructions, and in the control systems. DuPont's extensive product offering in these areas includes Suva® refrigerantsRynite®PET polyester and Zytel® nylon resin for motor coil forms, Herberts® Electro impregnation resins and wire enamels, a full line of electronic materials for printed wiring board constructions and Krytox® lubricants. Du Pont products also provide virtually all of the plastics used in connections and electromagnetic interference shielding resins for module covers, where needed.

DuPont also provides high strength, stiff materials for doors, louvers, blower motor housings and fans, sealing, gaskets, and thrust washers, as well as world class materials for protection against leaks and the harsh effects of wear and friction.  Through its joint venture with Teijin, DuPont Teijin Films™, DuPont also supplies a full line of high performance films for electrical insulation including Mylar® polyester film and Kapton® polyimide film

Components
Arc Resistance
With the potential move to 42-volt systems, eliminating arcing is more complex, because any voltage over 15 volts can cause a sustainable arc.
Components
Electrical Insulation
Ensuring the integrity of advanced electric and electronic systems requires careful isolation of wires and components from other wires and components as well as protection from an often harsh vehicle operating environment.
Components
Electromagnetic Shielding (EMI)
When it comes to robust EMI shielding, the right material, design and astute execution deliver the shielding and mechanical properties needed in a variety of demanding applications.
Components
Encapsulation
Thermoplastic encapsulation of delicate electrical components and electronic devices can cut manufacturing costs and at the same time package and protect those components from harsh automotive environments.
Components
Miniaturization
In the advanced automotive electrical and electronic system, many formerly mechanical functions will be performed electrically and precisely controlled with advanced electronics, further driving the need for miniaturization.
Components
Thermal Management
Vehicles today are exposed to a wide range of operating conditions and environments from the cold of the arctic to the intense heat of the deserts to the high humidity of the tropics. Future higher voltage systems will increase the number of heat sources in the vehicle and new systems will generate heat in locations previously considered low-temperature areas.
