Personal mobility is a treasured freedom around the world with more than 760 million vehicles on the road. But it can come at the price of human safety. There are six million recorded crashes a year, with as many as 43,000 lives lost and about 3 million injured on U.S. roads. Europe statistics are roughly equal to these. Statistical data is being developed for other regions of the world as these regions develop their automotive industry and the infrastructure to handle more personal vehicles.

While concerns about driver training and impairment are paramount issues for motorist safety, the auto industry is addressing how technology can further mitigate the effects of a vehicle crash or collision. Beyond the crash worthiness of the vehicle structure, the single greatest breakthroughs in automotive safety came from the standardization of seat belts and nylon 66 front driver and passenger air bags where DuPont materials technology played a fundamental role.
Today, DuPont is working with automakers on new technology that can further mitigate motor vehicle fatalities and injuries through both passive and active systems. Moreover, DuPont offers the electronic materials technologies required to develop new, reliable collision avoidance systems that promise great strides in lowering societal costs as injuries are avoided altogether.
