DuPont™ Teflon® FFR

Fluoroplastic Foam Insulation 
Today DuPont is pioneering innovations in the foaming of fluoroplastic resins in order to support the development of advanced TIA/EIA Category 6 and 10 gigabit (10G-BASE-T) communications cables, coaxial cables, and other cables where high data transmission ratios are required.

Foaming fluoroplastic resin insulation reduces its dielectric constant, providing opportunities for miniaturization and weight savings because lower insulation wall thickness can be used. In addition, because this reduces dissipation factor the resulting insulated wire has lower capacitance and attenuation.   Foamed insulation also increases the relative velocity of data transmission over insulated wire.

Resin and processing requirements are highly dependent on construction.  For thicker wall constructions (i.e., coaxial RG cable) a resin with a lower melt flow rate (MFR) is used with higher void content using lower draw down tooling.  For thinner wall constructions (i.e., Category 6 and 10G-BASE-T cables) a higher MFR resins is used at a lower void content using higher draw down tooling.

Return Loss measures the amount of signal that is lost due to reflections along the length of the cable.  Successful use of our foamed and fluoropolymer resins generates good adhesion of insulation to the copper conductor which in turn leads to improved return loss.

Family of DuPont™ Teflon® FFR Resins for Wire and Cable Applications
DuPont™ Teflon® FFR 430
DuPont™ Teflon® FFR 430 fluoroplastic foam resin has been developed with a superior nucleant package to provide improved foam cell structure and a broader processing window. It has the lowest melt flow (7) of the FFR resins, making it best suited for the larger plenum coax cables, particularly when the lowest smoke generation is a key design consideration. The foamed insulation of Teflon® FFR 430 fluoroplastic foam resin provides high-speed data transmission with minimal distortion, and good cable structural return loss with reduced attenuation. FFR 430 offers cable designers opportunities for reducing cable size with cable weight savings or the use of larger conductors to construct low-loss cables without the need for increased dielectric dimensions.

DuPont™ Teflon® FFR 550
DuPont™ Teflon® FFR 550 is fluoroplastic compounded with a nucleating package. Supplied as white pellets, this resin is used in a gas injected foam extrusion process to produce foamed dielectric insulation. The nucleating package in this resin, when combined with nitrogen gas injection, forms uniform foam cells in the insulation. Foaming the fluoroplastic reduces its dielectric constant, providing opportunities for miniaturization and weight savings. Foamed insulation of Teflon® FFR 550 fluoroplastic produces cable with high frequency signal transmission and minimal distortion.

DuPont™ Teflon®  FFR 750
DuPont™ Teflon® FFR 750 is a specialty fluoroplastic compounded with a nucleating package. Supplied as white pellets, this resin is used in a gas injected foam extrusion process to produce foamed dielectric insulation. The nucleating package in this resin, when combined with nitrogen gas injection, forms uniform foam cells in the insulation. Foaming the fluoroplastic reduces its dielectric constant, providing opportunities for miniaturization and weight savings. Foamed insulation of Teflon® FFR 750 fluoroplastic produces cable with high frequency signal transmission and minimal distortion.

DuPont™ Teflon®  FFR 770
DuPont™  Teflon® FFR 770 is fluoroplastic compounded with a nucleating package. The nucleating package in this resin, when combined with nitrogen gas injection, forms uniform foam cells in the insulation. DuPont™ Teflon® FFR 880
DuPont™ Teflon® FFR 880 fluoroplastic foam resin was developed to meet the demand for superior micro coaxial designs required for manufacturing compact electronic devices. Foamed insulation of Teflon® FFR 880 fluoroplastic foam resin provides high-speed data transmissions with minimal distortion and exceptional signal return loss and attenuation performance in ultra-thin wire and cable applications. In addition, the resin’s high thermal stability and melt flow rate (nominal MFR of 42) allow for high processing speeds and excellent heat resistance. Teflon® FFR 880 fluoroplastic foam resin offers cable designers opportunities for miniaturization and weight savings or the use of larger conductors to construct low-loss cables without the need for increased dielectric dimensions.
