Capstone™ fluorosurfactants are multifunctional in paints and coatings, especially when formulated with low or no VOC products.. Benefits include wetting (improved intercoat adhesion, and the ability to wet out low energy surfacts), leveling (improved gloss, and reduced “orange peel,” or decreased incidence of Benard cells), antiblocking (the tendency of glossy paints to stick to themselves), and the ability to reduce cratering, an effect due to the presence of surface imperfections or contaminants.

Converters (people who finish films for printing, metalizing, or tape manufacturers)
General Product Recommendations:
DuPont™ Zonyl® FSG, FSO-100, and 8857A. Where soil repellency is desired Zonyl® 8857A will impart durable oil and water repellency.
Aqueous Systems
Capstone™ fluorosurfactants are multifunctional in paints and coatings.
General Product Recommendations:
Zonyl® FS-610, 9361, FSE, for acrylics, latex systems, or polyurethanes in aqueous emulsions. Capstone™ FS-81 to impart oil repellency and easy cleanability to flat latex coatings.
Ink and Graphics Arts
DuPont™ Zonyl® products give excellent wetting and leveling properties for these types of coatings, without interfering with the dispersed phase dyes and pigments. Further, since the Zonyl® tends to rise to the air interface, they can reduce “transfer’ to the next surface when sheet or roll-type products are stacked
General Product Recommendations:
Zonyl® FSO and FSP. Zonyl® FS-610 also protects metal parts in inking equipment.
Product Functions:
Anti-block

Leveling
Wetting
Adhesives, Sealants, Caulks
Many types of adhesives exist, e.g. adhesives for tape, for hot-melt, for wood (and other porous surfaces), and many other applications. They are used in the packaging, construction, and many OEM applications. In general, addition of a small amount of Zonyl® improves wetting and penetration of the adhesive into the pore structure of the items to be joined, strengthening the bond.
General Product Recommendation:
Zonyl® FSO, FS-610, FSN, FS-300
Product Functions:
Wetting
Reduced surface defects
Dynamic surface tension reduction
Penetration of adhesive
Films
Surface energy of the film is increased by ionization, flame treatment, or the film contains some manner of “roughener” to improve adhesion of subsequent coatings.
Print Acceptors – DuPont™ Capstone™ and Zonyl® improves wetting and leveling of coatings for ink, improving adhesion, abrasion resistance, reducing transfer, and general “printability.” General Product Recommendation: Zonyl® FS-610, FSO, Capstone™ FS-10
Water Resistance – anti-fog characteristics: Manufacturers of agricultural films can treat PE films with Zonyl® to improve ‘ rolloff” of condensate, increasing sunlight in greenhouses. Recommend Zonyl® FSO-100
Anistats- Coatings containing Zonyl® have static resistance. Recommend Zonyl® FSO, FS-610.
UV-Curable coatings – several Zonyl® Intermediates will “lift and lock” in UV systems:
General Recommendations: Zonyl® TM, 8857A Good for an overprint varnish
Re-Wet – Zonyl® comes to the top of a coating, and encourages wetting in multi-coat operations. Recommend Zonyl® FSO, FS-610, 9361
Release Coatings – Zonyl®, sitting atop a coating, can impart release characteristics to that coating. Can be similar to applications noted in UV curable systems. Recommend: Zonyl® FSO, FS-610 for aqueous. There are basically two types of films: CAST (the polymer is dissolved in some manner of solvent, cast on a belt or drum, and the solvent is driven off (and often, recovered) and EXTRUDED (melted resin is pushed through a die).
Although there are many types of films, the function of Zonyl® is quite similar in all:
- Anti-block characteristics for roll products
- Anti-static properties
- Improved surface properties
- Most films are post-treated to accept coatings
- Leveling of the film, giving even thickness
- Reduction of cratering caused by the presence of impurities
- Release – getting the film to come off the belt/drum without deformation, tearing, or edge effects
- Water repellency
- Wetting
