Award-Winning Project Removes More Than 5,100 Metric Tons of Emissions From Local Air
The DuPont Chambers Works site was recently honored by the American Chemistry Council for its work to reduce plant energy consumption and minimize energy-related environmental impacts.
The Salem County manufacturing plant was awarded an American Chemistry Council's Energy Efficiency Award in the category of "Significant Improvement in Manufacturing- Operating Unit."
"I am very proud of our DuPont plant team for all their energy conservation efforts and the results they have achieved," said Bland Dickey, plant manager. "This award is nice, but the real reward comes from knowing that we are making a positive contribution to the environment and our business."
The American Chemistry Council's Energy Efficiency Award is given annually to recognize chemical manufacturing facilities across the country that demonstrate outstanding results in saving energy and reducing related greenhouse gas emissions.
The Chambers Works award recognized efforts that contributed to an elimination of more than 5,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, or the equivalent of removing more than 934 cars from Salem County's roads each year.
The plant's Aramids Production Unit requires a significant amount of heat to operate safely and efficiently. Currently, two large gas-fired process heaters provide the required heat source. The plant determined that a waste gas was available from an existing flare system, which could be utilized in the heater burners to reduce natural gas consumption. To make the most effective use of the process, the heater burners were modified and the necessary waste gas supply system was installed. The system is performing well and the successful project experience is being shared broadly at other DuPont sites which have the potential to recover flared waste gases in gas-fired equipment.
The Chambers Works site has been operating in southern New Jersey for more than 90 years and today, the site employs approximately 1,000 DuPont employees and contract partners. The plant's work force manufactures approximately 500 products for 17 global markets including firefighting, police and military, automotive, stain repellants and protectants, and agricultural.
In addition to DuPont's efforts to improve energy efficiency in its operations, the company offers solutions to improve energy efficiency in the construction, transportation and agriculture industries with products like DuPont™ Tyvek® and productivity enhancing seeds. The company also is working to develop solutions in the alternative energy markets of solar, wind, fuel cells and biofuels.
