DuPont Chemical Solutions Enterprise Completes Acquisition of Alkylation Division of STRATCO, Inc.
DuPont Chemical Solutions Enterprise announced today it has acquired the alkylation division of STRATCO, Inc., a leading alkylation technology licensing company servicing oil refineries throughout the globe. Assets acquired include the STRATCO® brand name and technology, intellectual property, a global customer base, personnel and offices in Leawood, Kan.; Houston, Texas, and; London, England. Financial terms were not disclosed.
“This acquisition complements our Refinery Solutions business and is part of the DuPont Environmental Solutions growth strategy to provide scientific solutions to the oil refining industry,” said DuPont Refinery Solutions Market Leader James S. Pawloski. “The oil refining industry is faced with a need to replace MTBE, an octane enhancer and oxygenate for gasoline that has been found to be persistent in groundwater. One preferred process, alkylation, can use sulfuric acid as a catalyst. With 75 years of experience providing sulfuric acid to refineries, the purchase of the STRATCO alkylation division gives DuPont the ability to leverage our sulfur management capabilities by providing a comprehensive resource for refineries’ alkylation and catalyst needs.”
Founded in 1928 as Stratford Engineering Corp., STRATCO is a leader in the lubricating grease industry and also provides equipment and process solutions to various industries including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, modified asphalt and biodiesel. STRATCO will maintain its corporate office in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The STRATCO Alkylation Division will be integrated into DuPont Refinery Solutions, part of the DuPont Chemical Solutions Enterprise. The Alkylation Licensing and Service & Repairs divisions will continue to be lead by Glenn Liolios and Mike Cherry respectively.
“We see this as an opportunity to provide an immediate solution to the MTBE issue for some oil refiners while DuPont works to develop additional offerings and sulfur solutions for this industry,” Pawloski added.
