Corian® contributed to the iconic impact of the New Amsterdam Plein & Pavilion by Ben van Berkel

The New Amsterdam Plein & Pavilion by Ben van Berkel of UNStudio is a permanent gift from the Kingdom of the Netherlands to New York City.

UNStudio incorporated DuPont™ Corian®, a flexible and innovative design material, to create the exceptionally daring horizontal and vertical surfaces that contribute to the Pavilion’s iconic impact. The Pavilion’s completed roof and undulating sidewalls glow with polished Corian® surfaces, which frame the fritted glass enclosures. These four wings radiate from a center oculus, which is punctuated by polished aluminum grill work, facilitating the ventilation of the building. The pavilion will be equipped with an electronic LED façade system that allows for a constantly changing light show at night, “an experience that will carry the animation and drama of the day into the evening,” according to van Berkel.

Anchoring the north end of the Peter Minuit Plaza in New York City is the award-winning New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion. This historic $2.3 million gift from the Kingdom of the Netherlands on the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's arrival into New York harbor honors four centuries of Dutch-American friendship and a mutual passion for the values of innovation and creativity, diversity and openness, entrepreneurship and progress.
