Interview with Nuru Karim
What is the Concept of Bodhi Installation & Why Did You Specify Corian®?
LIVE co-director Nuru Karim (India) produced a set of pieces in collaboration with LaN co-director Luis Fraguada [Spain] for an exhibition called "Relative Visa" held in a gallery Bodhi Space in Mumbai. The main idea was to develop a physical resonance in response to the brief of the exhibition. A script was written which takes an input surface and through a sine function, modulates surface coordinates in the positive and negative z axis. Each side of the surface was given a distinct frequency. When brought together, a new interference pattern emerges. These were milled in DuPont™ Corian®.
The MusicPod designed by Nuru Karim is an incremental aggregative strategy for a single/ multiple users exploring concepts such as composition and instrumentation, continuity and flow, silence and resonance and has been digitally designed and fabricated encased by the versatile and "fluid" DuPont™ Corian®.
A Fluid "Installation" Skin 12mm thick was developed in collaboration with DuPont™ Corian® India. The project operates at two distinct spatial scales; one machined numerically and the other thermoformed.
I Love Corian® because...
Corian® is a favorite amongst many international designers for its seamlessness, versatility and fluidity. It is indeed a path-breaking material allowing designers to extend the limits of space and experience beyond traditional modes of design processes and production. A material that can be digitally fabricated provides flexibility and incredible potential for designers both in interior and architectural applications. Its ability to be CNC'd, thermoformed... Light-transmitting properties such as translucency, ability to design luminescent surfaces/ skins and consisdent Research and Development [hopefully injection molded Corian® is just around the corner] makes it a material for the present and the future.
