Swine Production Biosecurity

Standard Continuous Biosecurity Programme Procedures

The aim of the standard continuous biosecurity programme is firstly to prevent pathogens from establishing themselves on site and, secondly, to prevent the spread of infection within the farm site.

With this in mind the following continuous biosecurity procedures must be implemented at all times:

Visitors

Care must be taken to ensure that visitors appreciate the biosecurity measures you have taken to protect your site, and protective equipment should be issued to visitors where appropriate.

Disinfectant Footdips

Place DuPont disinfectant footdips at the farm entrance, the entrance to each building and each room and by the loading bay.  Ensure all personnel and visitors disinfect their footwear when entering at any of these points.  Replenish every 4-5 days or when visibly contaminated.

Wheel Wash, Vehicle Sprays & Mobile Equipment

Any vehicle entering the site should pass through a disinfectant wheel wash or vehicle spray.  The wheel wash should be topped-up regularly to avoid dilution or contamination.  Mobile equipment brought on to the site from other units must be washed and disinfected before being allowed to enter.

Loading Bays

Loading bays must be cleaned and disinfected after each use.

Paths & Roadways

To reduce the potential spread of infection, keep paths and roadways clear of dung and refuse and regularly spray with an appropriate DuPont broad spectrum disinfectant.

Movable Equipment

Move equipment around the farm site as little as possible. Routinely dry clean, wash and disinfect after each use.

Personal Hygiene

Dirty or unwashed hands transfer infection.  All visitors to the site must wash their hands before entering.  All staff must wash their hands before starting work, after breaks and when changing activities.  This is obviously particularly important after treating diseased pigs.

Contaminated clothing should be changed between departments - particularly important in farrowing.

Isolation Policy

Maintain isolation premises for incoming pigs, and ensure a disinfectant footdip is used when entering and leaving that building.  Use different overalls and boots for dealing with these pigs and adopt a full terminal biosecurity programme between each new batch.

Water Lines & Drinkers

Continuous disinfection is important to maintain water quality during the production cycle.  Drinking water can be a potent source and spread of infection and can lead to reduced performance.  Header tanks and pipelines need to be regularly cleaned and disinfected with a non-tainting disinfectant.

Aerial Disinfection

Spraying a fine disinfectant mist or fog over animals can help reduce risk of cross infection during outbreaks of respiratory and other diseases. This is particularly useful in weaners, growers and finishers.  It can also help reduce the risk of infection spread if other farms in the area are infected with a disease outbreak.

DuPont ™ Virkon® S can be misted in the presence of livestock or poultry at a dilution rate of 1:200 (0.5%).

A cold fogger or mister should be used, as the noise of a thermal fogger may disturb the animal’s behaviour.

Always read the Virkon® S label carefully to ensure regulatory compliance.

Method

Use a mechanical or plumbed in misting system or a pressure washer to deliver a very fine mist or fog of disinfectant to fill the atmosphere.  Apply two to four times daily over the batch during the period of risk.

Rodent Control

Rats and mice can be responsible for the spread of a number of serious diseases, such as Swine Dysentery, Salmonella and Leptospirosis infections.  Ensure that feed spillages are removed as quickly as possible and that houses are made secure from vermin. Implement an effective rodent control programme.
