Ecomite

Poultry Insect Control

Uses

The use of ecomite supports the natural need of poultry to dust and thus protect itself from; mites (chicken mite, scab mite) chewing lice, fleas and lice. In addition ecomite controls the lesser mealworm, bugs and cockroaches.

Formulation

A powder with the majority of particle sizes between 13-15 microns with no artificial additives.

Mode of Action

Ecomite is derived from diatomaceous earth by a special process, is highly micronised and consists of specific amorphous silica (silicon dioxide) which has abrasive and absorptive effects due to its physical properties. The extremely fine silica dust adheres to the joints of arthropods fissures and causes reduced activity and mobility and loss of health. The product cuts the external skin layers of ectoparasites and the sclerotized wax layer of insects resulting in desiccation and eventual death. Owing to its special mode of action, development of resistance can be disregarded. As soon as insect pests leave their shelter they come in contact with the silica dust, contaminate their body surface and gradually dessicate.

The positive effect on the poultry can be easily identified by a reduction in restlessness and an increased up-take of feed, in areas where the target insects were a problem.

Application

Method; for best results, it is recommended that the treatment areas are thoroughly cleaned and free from dust.  Ecomite can be applied with a handheld blow and vacuum gun, appropriate sand blasting guns connected to compressed air (5-8 bar) or with similar suitable dusting equipment. It should be applied on all sites where the target pests are normally or could be expected to be found.  Cracks and crevices on cage constructions and elsewhere in the premises are places where insects retreat and hide during the cleaning of the poultry house or the introduction of the new crop of birds. A thorough coverage of all surface areas is therefore essential.  To ensure the efficacy of the product it must be kept dry and the humidity in the treatment environment must be less than 75% relative humidity.  During application and until the final settling of the dust, all ventilation equipment should be turned off.  ecomite is a natural and non toxic product and no adverse effects have been reported where infested poultry have come into contact with the dust.  However, the product should be applied to empty houses as long term studies on exposure to dust by during application poultry have not been completed.

Sticky traps are recommended to monitor the possible reappearance of the target pests.  In such cases where feather-dust and litter have diluted the ecomite layer, a follow up application is recommended.  If a suitable dust applicator is not available, ecomite can be suspended in water using a standard pressure washer (remove pressure washer filters before use as ecomite is suspended, not dissolved in water) or fogging machine. As the solution dries ecomite will appear as a white dust on all treated surfaces. Wet application of ecomite should only be carried out when the housings are unoccupied.

  For Dry Applications

30g powder = 1 m² surface coverage

300g powder = 10m² surface coverage

3kg powder = 100m² surface coverage

 For Wet Applications

Mix 60 grams powder to 1 litre of water (equals 2m² surface coverage)

Apply evenly and thoroughly to all surfaces to the point of run off.

Ensure that particular attention is paid to the cracks and crevices of the nesting/laying boxes and walls

Allow to dry thoroughly before reintroducing nesting materials and birds.

Storage

Always store in dry conditions in original containers and keep away from other chemical products. As ecomite is an inert non toxic product there should be no restrictions regarding the disposal of empty packs.

Safety Precautions

By its nature, ecomite creates a dusty environment during application hence;

  • Avoid contact with eyes and inhalation of dust
  • Wear suitable eye protection (to BS EN 166) and dust masks such as those conforming to EN 149 FFP2.
  • In the event of getting the dust in ones eyes, ensure eyes are washed thoroughly with water and, as a precaution, consult your doctor.
