Boarmate™

Boar odour spray for the management of swine breeding stock, in association with artificial insemination.

BOARMATE™ is an aerosol containing synthetically produced 'boar odour' (5[alpha]-androst-16-en-3-one).  This compound has an odour identical to that produced by the boar's submaxillary glands; the same odour that a sow reacts to by "standing" when she is ready for mating.

BOARMATE™ was developed as an aid to the farmer to overcome difficulties that arise in identifying sows and gilts that are ready for insemination.

BOARMATE™ is used to stimulate sows and gilts into showing the "standing" reflex that indicates their readiness to receive the boar and which coincides with the optimum time for conception.
When used as directed BOARMATE™ will effectively eliminate the problems associated with poor heat detection in sows and gilts in the absence of the boar and will improve the efficient use of Artificial Insemination (AI).

BOARMATE™ is very cost effective.  If one application in 100 prevents a missed or wasted service then BOARMATE™ has paid for itself.

N.B. ONE MISSED HEAT costs at least 21 days extra feed and lost production.

Spray BOARMATE™ at the gilt or sows snout for two seconds from a distance of approximately 60 centimetres, then apply pressure to the back of the sow (the "back pressure" test).

If the sow responds, proceed with insemination.  One can of BOARMATE™ gives 80 seconds spray sufficient for 40 applications.

To maximise conception rates, the breeder using artificial insemination should be looking for the following signs of oestrus (heat).  The first signs of heat usually include reddening and swelling of the lips of the vulva.  Between 24 and 48 hours later the vulva is clearly enlarged and a mucous discharge may appear.  In the next 24-48 hours these signs diminish. It is during this period that successful mating will occur, and when the sow will show the "standing" reflex.  Gilts will normally come into heat (oestrus) at 7 months of age; the stage at which she is first served will depend on the breeder. Sows will come into heat usually within 4-6 days of weaning.
