DeLisle Black Network Presents Scholarships August 22, 2006 - The DeLisle Black Network awarded four worthy African-American college-bound students with $1,000 scholarships in a dinner and recognition ceremony Friday, July 21.

Recipients of DeLisle Black Network Scholarships and DuPont DeLisle representatives from left to right: Megan Graham, Pat Nichols, Nicole Tureaud, Darlene Lee, Brandon Butler and Joe Piernas.Recipients of the scholarships are:

  • Darlene Lee, who attended Bay High School but graduated from Baker High in Mobile due to Hurricane Katrina, Darlene will attend the University of South Alabama this fall studying nursing.
  • Brandon Butler, a graduate of Saint Stanislaus who will study to become a pharmacist at the University of Southern Mississippi.
  • Jaren Bowser, a graduate of Pass Christian High who will attend Millsaps College.
  • Meghan Graham, a graduate of Pass Christian High will attend the University of Southern Mississippi and major in pre-dentistry.

To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants had to meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant cannot be the son or daughter of a DeLisle Black Network member
  • The applicant must be slated to successfully complete high school by June 30, 2006
  • The applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale
  • The applicant must provide an official copy of his or her high school transcripts
  • The applicant must enroll in school within six months of the date of the scholarship award
  • The applicant must compose an essay of 500 words on “How I plan to use my college education to enhance my African-American community.”

The awards are granted by a committee within the DeLisle Black Network headed by Joe Piernas, Kathy Evans and Nicole Tureaud.  The committee looks at both the student’s GPA and the written essay to determine scholarship recipients.
