Heartwalk Surpasses Goal and Changes Lives

November 9, 2006 - This year, the Gulf Coast Heart Walk saw a significant increase in the amount of money raised, surpassing the goal of $275,000.  As of Monday, October 30, the Walk was nearing the $313,000 mark with money still coming in to be added to that total.

The actual walk, held on Saturday, October 28 at Jones Park in Gulfport had more than 4,000 participants who came out to support the fight against America’s number one killer, heart disease.

The fundraising effort enlisted the assistance of more than 100 companies, including DuPont DeLisle employees and Zachry contractors.  “Many companies believe this can be an outlet for health and fitness education as well as build morale and company spirit,” said Nicole Noto, American Heart Association regional director.  “It is these wonderful companies that have been able to make this walk very successful.”

Last year the American Heart Association donated more than $1.6 million back to the state of Mississippi; due to the success of this and other AHA events.

“This year’s walk was led by Pat Nichols and co-lead by Carl Chaney from Hancock Bank.  These two individuals made a commitment to making this event a success in both areas of education and raising money,” said Noto.  “Due to their leadership and undying spirit this event has far exceeded our expectations.”

DeLisle employees and Zachry contractors worked hard to make this a huge success.  The following is a list of plant-related fundraising activities and the amounts they raised:

Softball Tournament  3,500.00
Car Show  1,600.00
Gift Card Raffle  1,200.00
Poboy Sale 1  1,750.00
Poboy Sale 2  1,800.00

Necklace Raffle     900.00
Grill Raffle  4,000.00

The Gulf Coast Heart Walk has been the number one fundraising walk in the state for the past four years.  AHA officials are confident that this year it will be the leader once again.  The walk has also surpassed walks in other states including the New Orleans and Mobile walks.

Congratulations and thank you to all the DeLisle employees and contractors who worked so hard to make this event such a great success!
