Federal Agency Finds No Health Hazard at DuPont DeLisle
The fifth in a line of regulatory reports has reinforced today that the DuPont DeLisle manufacturing facility had no adverse environmental impact due to Hurricane Katrina. In a report recently issued for comment by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the federal agency corroborates findings of three U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports and a public announcement by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) confirming that the DuPont DeLisle site’s environmental measures successfully weathered the storm and performed as designed and permitted.
“Concentrations of contaminants detected in soil and sediment samples collected in the DeLisle area pose no apparent health hazard to persons living in the area,” according to the ATSDR report. The ATSDR study looked at findings from EPA studies as well as a study conducted by Wilma Subra, an environmental consultant.
“This federal agency report further reinforces three previous EPA reports,” said Pat Nichols, DuPont DeLisle plant manager. “It’s especially important because it looked not only at the government studies but at the Sierra Club’s own data. The report found that DuPont DeLisle’s environmental protection systems were not compromised and our facility had no adverse environmental impact because of Katrina.”
“Our facility is well studied and all state and federal reports confirm that any material found is well within acceptable ranges and has no impact on our employees and neighbor’s health,” said Nichols. “The EPA has said so; MDEQ has said so; ChemRisk has said so; and now the ATSDR agrees.
