Sustainable Growth is Our Cornerstone

The cornerstone of DuPont's environmental stewardship is sustainable growth - constantly reducing the environmental footprint of our operations while bringing value to the community and ensuring that our activities are compatible with nature.

Safety, Health and EnvironmentWe operate with the consent of the community and we are committed to honoring that consent every day through our performance.

DuPont DeLisle has approximately 3500 acres on its plant site with the plant only occupying 200 acres of that land. Of that, approximately 2,000 acres are undeveloped forestlands. More than 1,000 acres of wildlife habitat is maintained in its natural state within these forestlands and we intend that it be kept that way. In 2002, the plant sold, at well below market value, more than 600 acres of pristine timberland to The Nature Conservancy, which turned it over to the State of Mississippi as part of the state's Coastal Preserves Program. Through this effort, DuPont is helping ensure that our environmental heritage on the Gulf Coast continues to be honored and preserved.

At DeLisle, we adhere to the highest standards for the safe operation of our facility and the protection of the environment, our employees, our customers and the people of the communities in which we do business. We strengthen our businesses by making safety, health and environmental issues an integral part of all business activities and by continuously striving to align our businesses with public expectations.

We believe that all injuries and occupational illnesses, as well as safety and environmental incidents, are preventable, and our goal for all of them is zero. We will promote off-the-job safety for our employees as well. We assess the environmental impact of each facility we propose to construct and design, build, operate and maintain all our facilities and transportation equipment so they are safe and acceptable to local communities and protect the environment.

At the DeLisle site we strive to minimize waste generation at the source. Materials are reused and recycled to minimize the need for treatment or disposal and to conserve resources. Where waste is generated, it is handled and disposed of safely and responsibly. We work to reduce emissions, giving priority to those that may present the greatest potential risk to health or the environment. Where past practices have created conditions that require correction, we responsibly correct them.

We Meet Environmental Requirements

We take hundreds of environmental measurements each year to ensure compliance with the laws and regulations governing our operations. All operations, including wells and discharge sites are monitored continually by computerized systems that signal any sign of potential hazard; many of our processes are automatically controlled by computer systems that strengthen our ability to protect employees, the community and the environment.

As a member of the highly regulated chemical industry, we are subject to extensive regulatory supervision by Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), among others.

Helping Customers Help the Environment

Through unique and innovative packaging of our titanium dioxide, we are able to help our customers reduce waste. Packaging for many customers is either reusable or goes directly into their manufacturing process leaving no waste to dispose of.
