DuPont Displays today announced that it has begun construction on a second production line for liquid crystal display (LCD) Direct Bonding in Shenzhen, China. The new line, which will more than double the company’s Direct Bonding production capacity and clean room space in the region, comes in response to increased demand for affordable Direct-Bonded consumer products such as tablet personal computers (PCs) and marine electronics.

"We opened our Shenzhen facility last year – as part of a larger DuPont investment strategy in China – with the goal of bringing our established Direct Bonding technology for avionics, military and other specialized applications to display manufacturers for the consumer market," said Peter Compo, managing director of DuPont Displays. "This initiative has met with great success and we are now adding the capacity required to keep pace with market demand for our technology."

Combining an industry-leading proprietary adhesive with a cost-effective lamination process, DuPont™ Direct Bonding technology consists of bonding an anti-reflective glass or filter element directly onto the front of an LCD. This technology increases a display’s contrast ratio and ruggedization by over 300 percent, eliminates the condensation that occurs when a coverplate is used and dramatically improves the display’s resistance to scratching, stains and dirt. Direct Bonding has been used in specialized avionics and military applications for decades, but was commonly considered too costly to employ in consumer products. Now, with its improved operating efficiencies and close proximity to DuPont manufacturing partners, the Shenzhen facility has made Direct Bonding a viable option for consumer applications and allows widespread adoption of the technology.

Launched in 2005, the first DuPont™ Direct Bonding production line in Shenzhen was the first of its kind in Asia. This new line, scheduled to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2006, will be located in the same facility and will more than double the company’s regional Direct Bonding capabilities and footprint. Continued growth is anticipated with plans under way to launch a third line in 2007.

DuPont started its business in China in the mid-1980s and currently has 34 wholly owned and joint ventured facilities in the country. To date, total investment in China has exceeded US$600 million with approximately 5,500 employees. The new Direct Bonding production line and plans for future growth are further evidence of the company’s commitment to investment in China.
