Designed to lower AMOLED manufacturing costs, DuPont solution printed OLED technology includes a set of solution-based OLED materials that can be printed and coated at high speed using an innovative process. Fabrication of AMOLED displays by solution process reduces material consumption and lowers equipment costs compared to incumbent vapor deposition processes. These advantages result in significant cost benefits over both LCD and the incumbent technology. By closely tailoring the materials and process to work together, DuPont has made significant progress in printed lifetime and OLED materials performance.

DuPont OLED solution process utilizes a combination of coating and printing processes that are scalable to large motherglass size – one of the major drivers of manufacturing cost reduction in the displays industry. Non-patterned OLED layers may be deposited using existing slot die coating technology and patterned layers are deposited using a special high-speed printer developed specifically for printing OLEDs.

Solution Process for OLED Fabrication

Benefits of DuPont Solution Process:

  • Lower material and equipment cost
  • Scalable to larger glass size

Low Cost Manufacturing Scheme Attributes:

  • Use of inexpensive common layers
  • Only the emissive layer is patterned to increase throughput and yield
  • No fine shadowmasks

Balancing Performance and Cost:

  • Common layers optimized for overall performance of panel, not individual color.

Slot Die Coating of DuPont™ HIL

A proven technology in display manufacturing, slot die coating may be used to apply uniform, continuous  layers.

Benefits of Slot Coating:

  • Low material usage
  • Proven, high-yield process that is scalable to Gen 8
  • Conformal, uniform coating of organic layer
  • More uniform than spin coating
