DuPont Dordrecht reduces water usage and emission of CO2
DuPont globally works on a reduction of the environmental footprint. The sustainability goals of 2015 are a part of that. DuPont Dordrecht annually conserves 160.000 m³ drinking water thanks to a smart application of water from the groundwater installation. The cooperation with HVC, a neighbouring waste treatment company, will lead to a reduction of 50 thousand tons of CO2 annually. This is comparable with the annual emission of 15,000 mid-class cars. DuPont has received five awards from the American Chemistry Council (ACC) because of the endeavours that the organisation did to save energy. Receiving these awards is an acknowledgement for the companies’ long-existing efforts to reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses and to save energy. Thanks to these award-winning projects, DuPont is able to reduce the annual energy use with 2,7 billion BTU’s, enough to supply 21,000 homes with energy. The full-year reductions represented by the award-winning projects have an additional environmental benefit equivalent to the reduction of 522 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Between 1990 and 2005 DuPont reduced global greenhouse gas emissions by 72 percent. As part of DuPont’s 2015 Sustainability Goals, the company has committed to reduce greenhouse gas emission by an additional 15 percent. These projects represent important steps toward reaching that goal. In the world of rising energy costs, these projects have a financial benefit for the company as well. Each of the five award-winning projects were justified by a rate of return that was in excess of the cost of capital – making them improvements that paid for themselves. “I am very proud of our DuPont Operations team for these projects, and all the energy conservation progress we are making at our manufacturing sites around the world,” said Mathieu Vrijsen, Senior Vice President Operations and Engineering. “It is rewarding to know that we are reducing global energy demand and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while at the same time strengthening our businesses.” In addition to DuPont’s efforts to improve energy efficiency in its operations, the company also offers solutions to improve energy efficiency in the construction, transportation and agriculture industries with products like DuPont™ Tyvek®, DuPont™ Kevlar® and productivity enhancing seeds. The company is also working to develop solutions in the alternative energy markets of solar, wind and biofuels. DuPont – one of the first companies to publicly establish environmental goals 18 years ago – has broadened its sustainability commitments beyond internal footprint reduction to include market-driven targets for both revenue and research development investment. The goals are tied directly to business growth, specifically to the development of safer and environmentally improved news products for key global markets. DuPont is a science-based products and services company.
