Paris, 30 January 2009 – Centigon, the global leader in vehicle armouring, uses the aramid
fibre DuPont™ Kevlar® for new armoured vehicle programmes with Renault Trucks, Land
Rover and Jaguar.
Kevlar® armouring systems consist of composite panels for side fittings and floors, with a
varying number of layers being applied according to the vehicle type and protection level
sought. They enhance the protection of floors and side fittings, especially against shards of
explosives and ballistic attacks.
DuPont™ Kevlar® is an organic fibre from the aramid family offering an excellent
combination of properties: it is lightweight, sturdy and fireproof, affording protection and
thermal resistance. Kevlar® is five times stronger than steel at equal weight, thus providing
astounding sturdiness combined with amazingly reliable and durable material performance.
Kevlar® armouring systems are less cumbersome, easy-to-model and adaptable to vehicle
structure, for simplified, quicker and thus less costly installation. Kevlar® boasts high ballistic
performance and can withstand extreme temperatures, remaining relatively lightweight
without being too cumbersome. These properties are extremely important to ensure
protection whatever the circumstances, while maintaining payload performance and vehicle
mobility.
Centigon France SAS produces three hundred armoured vehicles a year for various
manufacturers, for military, private and cash-in-transit vehicles. The army, police, NGOs and
private firms form its customer base in France and abroad.
Centigon, global leader in armouring and integrator for Renault Trucks, Land Rover &
Jaguar, “was seeking to integrate safe, effective armouring while keeping vehicles as light
as possible”, comments Ronan Floch, Centigon Carat Technology Director. “Using Using
Kevlar® meant this aim could be attained, whilst guaranteeing appropriate ballistic
protection”, adds Rodolphe Besnard, Territory Manager with DuPont Advanced Fibers
Systems.
Kevlar® was first developed by DuPont de Nemours in 1965, a synthetic fibre of organic
origin with astoundingly sturdy mechanical strength.
Security and personal protection is both a priority and a speciality for DuPont, which also
carries out research with the users of other finished products. Over the course of time
Kevlar® has proved useful in a host of applications, including the manufacture of bullet-proof
vests, naturally, plus cable reinforcement, aeroplane fittings, tennis rackets, skis and even
tyres, and seismic protection for buildings.
In the sphere of military applications alone, Kevlar® fibre features in ultra-lightweight
personal helmets and vests through to heavy armouring of military vehicles. The protection
can be adapted to threats ranging from light ballistic munitions through to rockets and
RPGs. Personal protection gear made using state-of-the-art Kevlar® also affords protection
from knives and other threats. Likewise, for vehicles, new protective parts using Kevlar®
fibre not only afford protection from firearm threats but also from explosive devices. Kevlar®
thus provides appropriate solutions to today’s requirements.

Centigon France SAS specialises in the armouring of military vehicles, cash-in-transit vans,
SUVs, saloons and other special vehicles. Its ballistic laboratory helps the R&D Department
optimise armouring solutions including metals (steel, aluminium and titanium), ceramics
and/or composites.
Founded in 1948 by Fernand Labbé, this Breton firm – originally coach building workshop
under the name LABBÉ - expanded into armouring in the early 1970s, with a payroll of 200
staff in 2008.
