GENEVA, Switzerland, August 4, 2009 — DuPont participated today in the launch event of Swiss Village, part of the Masdar Initiative, and shared details of the way in which the science of the company can help facing new global challenges that will be found as the world evolves. Sustainable energy, environmental respect, health and nutrition, urban living, safety and security, transportation or communications, are examples of these challenges. They will not revert and will gain momentum over time.

The Masdar Initiative is a global cooperative platform for the open engagement in the search for solutions to some of these pressing issues. Masdar city, near Abu Dhabi (UAE), is seen as the showcase of this initiative as it aims to be the first carbon neutral city in the world. This means that energy demand has to be reduced by 40% compared to existing cities.

The Association Swiss Village Abu Dhabi (SVA) aims to develop a dedicated Swiss Hub in Masdar City, including offices, light manufacturing facilities, and residential buildings. SVA is an information platform and an interest group representing a growing number of Swiss companies and organisations.

DuPont believes that some of the challenges the world is facing are trends that business can respond to both as an opportunity and as a solution. For instance, DuPont is creating new solutions based on many offerings of renewable energy.  Ten essential products that go into the manufacture of solar panels are made by DuPont. They are designed to work together to help increase the efficiency and lifetime of solar modules while reducing system cost to reach grid parity. Photovoltaics represent a $30 billion market growing 30 percent per year.

“Our scientific capability is a key innovation driver. We will soon be opening a Photovoltaic Excellence Centre at our European Technical Centre in Meyrin, which will serve as a focal point to develop the next generation of products for the photovoltaic market for global applications”, said Ian Hudson, President DuPont Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

“Responding to the world’s sustainability challenges takes experience, partnerships, and leadership. As the Association Swiss Village launches its information platform on green energy and sustainable living, DuPont is honoured to be a part of the opening dialogue”, added Mr. Hudson.
