Innovative New Class of High-Temperature Perfluoropolymer Expands Design Possibilities for Wire and Cable Used in New and Demanding Applications
WILMINGTON, Del., March 8, 2012 -- DuPont continues to meet the wire and cable and petroleum industries’ demands for innovative solutions with the introduction of DuPont™ ECCtreme™ ECA 3000 perfluoropolymer resin. This new material offers groundbreaking capability for high performance under extreme temperatures and conditions.
ECCtreme™ ECA 3000 resin insulation for wire and cable applications has the potential to operate at 300°C with the same high-temperature properties of perfluoropolymers typically used in these applications. This far surpasses the 260°C limit inherent in traditional perfluoropolymer insulating materials.
“ECCtreme™ ECA 3000 allows energy industries to move beyond limitations that have hindered operation in harsh environments, thereby expanding the current available options for wire and cable,” said Jacob Lahijani, Ph.D., senior technical consultant, DuPont Fluoropolymer Solutions. “ECCtreme™ ECA 3000 was developed in response to the wire and cable industry’s demand for a high-temperature, melt-extrudable polymer that has characteristics similar to PTFE, in order to allow innovative uses and greater reliability.”
ECCtreme™ ECA 3000 is unique due to the way it responds to extremely high temperatures. When the polymer is heat-treated at temperatures greater than 280°C, the result is epitaxial co-crystallization (ECC), which actually improves the functionality of the polymer. This new capability offers options for high-temperature tolerance in:
• geothermal uses
• electric submersible pumps (ESP)
• datalogging cables
• other oil and gas applications
• aerospace uses
• automotive uses
• heater cables
• appliance wire
“ECCtreme™ ECA 3000 has potential to play a critical role in enhancing technologies for wire and cabling markets — that speaks to our commitment to helping our customers to continually improve performance to meet the needs of today and of the future,” said Frenk Hulsebosch, DuPont Fluoropolymers global business leader. “DuPont is committed to leading the way in developing technologies to meet the demanding needs of the wire and cable industry.”
With a 40 year history in the wire and cabling business, wire and cable products made with DuPont Fluoropolymers are known for their excellent chemical resistance, superior electrical properties, and high-service temperatures. DuPont offers a wide variety of fluoropolymer resins processible by various means, all of which offer high dielectric strength, a low dielectric constant, low loss factors and extremely high specific resistance. Our fluoropolymer resins surpass most materials in their level and stability of dielectric properties over a broad range of environmental conditions.
