The Products

Titanium dioxide is a white pigment used in manufacturing many typical household items used on a daily basis.   TiO2 is used for providing brightness, ultra-violet protection, whiteness and opacity to products including paints, coatings, plastics, textiles, paper, inks, food, cosmetics and many other manufactured goods. The Edge Moor facility produces grades used primarily in the paper and paint industries.

One of the most appealing aspects of TiO2 is that it is inert and non toxic in any form, making it a preferable substitute for lead oxide as the primary pigment used for producing goods. TiO2 is ranked as one of the top fifty chemicals produced worldwide.

Manufacturing TiO2 at Edge Moor produces a co-product, ferric chloride (FeCl3) and an intermediate product, titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4).  Ferric chloride is sold to and distributed by an alliance partner for use in waste water treatment.  TiCl4 is an important material in the production of titanium metal and other titanium compounds. DuPont uses TiCl4 internally and also sells the product externally.

In 2007, the plant manufactured more than 94,000 tons of titanium dioxide and produced approximately 65,000 tons of ferric chloride and 3900 tons of titanium tetrachloride.

Quality Goals

DuPont Edge Moor and the entire Titanium Technologies division work hard to be recognized by customers as the global leader in the creation and production of high quality titanium dioxide. The team strives for reliability and customer convenience. Customers will have confidence that products made at the Edge Moor plant will meet or exceed their quality needs.
