DAHS Supports the Indonesian Red Cross Society to Implement AI Biosecurity Village Programmes
DuPont Animal Health Solutions (DAHS), leaders in veterinary and farm biosecurity have announced a joint initiative with the Palang Merah – Red Cross Society of Indonesia – aimed at combating the Avian Influenza (AI) Virus in Indonesian villages. With the Avian Influenza Virus having become endemic in many parts of South East Asia, DuPont Animal Health Solutions is joining forces with the Indonesian Government to help small-scale poultry farmers to better prevent and control the spread of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus.
The new Palang Merah/DuPont Programme will create local expert Task Forces to provide education, hands-on participation and partial surveillance to ensure solid biosecurity practices in 150 infected or high-risk villages, concentrating on the hot spots in Java.
Poultry farmers in infected areas will be shown how to terminally disinfect their farms and weekly follow-up visits will ensure that biosecurity measures are appropriately applied. Biosecurity measures will include effective perimeter control; transport biosecurity; use of disinfectant foot dips; avoidance of stock coming into contact with wild birds; thorough cleaning of poultry houses with a heavy duty, multi-purpose cleaner and most importantly, regular, thorough and effective disinfection of poultry houses with a broad spectrum virucidal disinfectant.
DuPont will assist in the development and implementation of biosecurity programmes, in addition to providing training for the appropriate use of the biosecurity products and equipment, including DuPontTM Virkon® S; DuPontTM Biosolve®-plusand personal protective clothing in the form of DuPont Tychem® and Tyvek® overalls.
DuPontTM Virkon® S is recognized by governments worldwide as a disinfectant of choice for Emergency Disease Control. During the Avian Influenza Virus outbreak in the Netherlands in 2003, Virkon® S was the only disinfectant purchased by the Dutch authorities (the RVV). This decision followed expert consultation with other global governmental bodies.
In terms of efficacy, DuPontTM Virkon® S is recommended by the AUSVETPLAN (Australian Veterinary Emergency Plan), the best regarded EDC reference source available, for all 13 viral OIE List A diseases where disinfection is recognised to be important. In addition DuPontTM Virkon® S has US Environmental Protection Agency official labelling as an approved EDC disinfectant for the major OIE List A diseases of concern including the Avian Influenza Virus, Foot and Mouth Disease, Newcastle Disease and Classical Swine Fever (Hog cholera).

Editor’s Notes:
Avian Influenza
Potentially lethal to entire poultry flocks, AI can spread rapidly across farms and through entire countries either through direct or even indirect contacts. AI is a zoonosis and cases of the most virulent H5N1 AI infection are steadily increasing in human beings across SE Asia, with new cases recently confirmed in Turkey. There is no treatment for AI although vaccines are available and under development. Vaccination is however only one method for prevention and control. Other methods and principles such as biosecurity still need to be applied even when vaccines are used.
