DuPont gives teachers hands-on experience with Math Out of the Box™
Thanks to DuPont's Fayetteville Works Plant, 24 third-grade teachers from schools in Bladen, Cumberland, and Robeson counties were recently introduced to an innovative program called Math Out of the Box™. Math Out of the Box™ is a new mathematics curriculum for students in kindergarten through fifth grade that features hands-on, inquiry-based lessons.
Math Out of the Box™ explores math concepts and skills in a "real-world" context, encouraging students to develop their natural abilities. The program provides innovative materials, a challenging curriculum, and quality professional development for participating teachers.
The Fayetteville Works Plant hosted the workshop in cooperation with Clemson University, the curriculum developer, and Carolina Biological Supply Company, which published the material. DuPont mentors, educators from Clemson's College of Engineering and Science, and a representative from the Carolina™ Curriculum division demonstrated the third-grade geometry kit, shapes and paths. Teachers worked in groups-a method often used in Math Out of the Box™ lessons-to obtain firsthand experience.
At the end of the session, DuPont provided curriculum kits to the teachers to use in their classes. There are 18 kits available on the following topics: Developing Algebraic Thinking, Developing Geometric Logic, and Developing Measurement Benchmarks. Clemson also is designing 12 kits on Developing Number Concepts. All the kits provide teachers with enough materials to teach 20 to 30 lessons, cover four to eight weeks of instructional time, and accommodate a class of up to 30 students.
The Fayetteville Works, which has supported education in the local area for over 35 years, is a subsidiary of DuPont, a science-based products and services company.
