  • Formacel® 1100: Life Cycle Assessment for Use in a Household Refrigerator, presented by Shaibal Roy, DuPont, et al.
The polyurethane foam industry for household appliances is transitioning from foam expansion agents (FEA) or blowing agents with high global warming potential (GWP) to low GWP alternatives. However, a low GWP is not the sole criterion for an FEA to minimize climate change potential of foam insulation, their performance to reduce the appliance energy usage should also be considered. In this work, the commonly used FEA, such as hydrocarbon (HC) blend was evaluated along with a low-GWP, zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) FEA option from DuPont, Formacel® 1100 (also known as HFO-1336mzz-Z) with lower thermal conductivity. A holistic approach using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was used to calculate climate change potential (CCP) across the entire supply chain, including raw material and PU foam production, foam installation, energy savings during product use, and end-of life (EOL) disposal. Neat Formacel® 1100 and Formacel® 1100 in blends with HC were both found to have lower life cycle CCP than HC FEA.
The biggest contributor to the climate change potential was the energy use during the life of the appliance. The effect of high GWP electricity source on the net CCP was also studied by considering electricity source from various US sub-regional grids with significantly different CCP burden.

  • Formacel® 1100: A Zero ODP and Low GWP Foam Expansion Agent for Spray Applications, presented by Ernest Wysong, DuPont
DuPont continues to expand the development of Formacel® 1100 (FEA-1100) as a unique zero ODP, low GWP, non-VOC, nonflammable foam expansion agent that provides a balanced option for environmental sustainability, excellent performance and a cost-effective conversion. This paper will discuss results from recent laboratory studies and customer evaluations pertaining to the spray foam market with key emphasis on stability, reactivity, and performance attributes.

  • Formacel® 1100 (FEA-1100), a Zero ODP and Low GWP Foam Expansion Agent for the Appliance Industry, presented by Gary Loh, DuPont, et al.

The global standards for energy efficiency are constantly rising and at the same time the industry faces ever-increasing pressure to address climate change by focusing on reducing or eliminating substances with high global warming potential. Foam expansion agents (blowing agents) are a vital component of rigid polyurethane foams, providing the outstanding insulation performance that is needed for improving the energy efficiencies of appliances and residential/commercial buildings while providing the right balance of weight and space conservation.
To meet these environmental and performance challenges, DuPont has developed Formacel®1100 (FEA-1100), a zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and low global warming potential (GWP) foam expansion agent for polyurethane foam applications.  Over the last several years, DuPont has demonstrated the use of Formacel®1100 and Formacel® 1100 blends to improve insulation and energy efficiency, cost effectiveness and flammability for various applications including Appliance, Pour-in-Place, Spray, and PIR boardstock. In this study, DuPont, Dow Chemical and Whirlpool evaluated the performance of Formacel®1100 and Formacel®1100-hydrocarbon blends in a residential refrigerator. In addition to showing the improvement in energy efficiency, this paper also discusses the foam performance in terms of system flow, minimum freeze stable density, material compatibility and initial k-factor in a household refrigerator/freezer.
