DuPont Recognized as Key Partner in Protecting U.S. Military Personnel
DuPont Protection Technologies announced it has signed a Supply Chain Alliance (SCA) with the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia (DSCP), the troop support center of the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). The alliance recognizes DuPont as a key supplier of DuPont™ Nomex® brand fiber to the U.S. military.
DuPont signed the SCA on Sept. 28 at a ceremony hosted by Army Brigadier General Gustave F. Perna, DSCP Commander. Through this partnership both organizations commit to working together to ensure that DLA goals and DLA responsibilities to its warfighter customers are met and maintained.
"DuPont continues to be a trusted partner of the Defense Logistics Agency," said Colonel Kurt D. Wilson, director, Clothing & Textiles Supply Chain -- DLA. “We are grateful for DuPont’s commitment to protect our men and women from the danger of thermal and flame hazards, whether they are mechanics, members of the infantry or performing any task where the risk of flash fire exists.
“We are committed to helping protect more troops. This end-to-end supply chain operation represents the voice of the customer and the people on the battlefield,” said William F. Weber, vice president -- DuPont Protection Technologies, North America. “This collaboration will increase our knowledge base and improve DuPont as a supplier.”
DuPont also was awarded a three-year $1.4 million contract by DSCP to build and maintain a buffer stock of Nomex® fiber, which is used to manufacture flame-resistant uniforms for U.S. warfighters. The program applies lean manufacturing principles that will help reduce both flame-resistant uniform lead times and DSCP's working capital.
Nomex® brand fiber is an integral component of military flight suits, vehicle crewman coveralls, balaclavas, jackets and gloves. It adds inherent flame resistance so that protective garments will not continue to burn after a flame source is removed. It also creates an insulating barrier that slows heat transfer and gives the wearer time to escape.
Over the past three years, DuPont’s investment in research and development of personal protection solutions has totaled more than $40 million annually, resulting in significant advances in personal protective equipment and next-generation technologies. All Nomex® supplied to the U.S. military is made at the DuPont Spruance plant in Richmond, Va.
