Agriculture
India is a vast country with varied climate, soils and ecological conditions. India is the largest producer of milk, fruits, cashew nuts, coconuts and tea in the world, the second largest producer of wheat, vegetables, sugar and fish and the third largest producer of tobacco and rice. Still, the challenge remains to grow India’s food supply as here population and economy continue to rise rapidly.
Indian agriculture has the daunting task of feeding and clothing 16% of the world’s population on less than 2% of the total landmass. With already 190 million hectares of gross cultivated area, the scope for bringing new areas under cultivation is severely limited. Thus, the growth will have to come from increased productivity.
