Through its Bulletproof Vest Partnership program, the United States Department of Justice grants matching funds (up to 50%) for the purchase of body armor by law enforcement. The partnership was created by act of Congress in 1998, and is administered by the Office of Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance. Since 1999, the program has distributed $173 million in federal funds to support the purchase of an estimated 450,000 protective vests.
