Purchasing Body Armor

Personal body armor is available in many configurations to defeat specific threats and to suit your personal needs for comfort and fit. Concealable vests, tactical armor, "executive" vests, "undercover" jackets for plainclothes officers, shields, helmets and even the gear used by SWAT teams are being made to satisfy an expanding list of personal protection needs. A full range of sizes, shapes and protection levels is available to fit male and female figures, and manufacturers are constantly designing new products. Many of them will even customize personal protective apparel to meet your specific requirements.

The level of protection you will wear depends on the type of duty, the climate and personal preferences for comfort and fit. Since most on-duty deaths and injuries occur during routine assignments, it is recommended that officers buy as much protection and coverage as they are willing to wear routinely. Statistics in the types of vests purchased under the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act were approximately 20% level 2A, 65% level 2 and 15% level 3A.
