Our Research and Development capabilities enable us to continue developing film and filling technologies, fitments and liquid packaging solutions to meet the demands of today's dynamic marketplace.
A key area of focus for nearly a decade has been down-gauging efforts for film used in pre-made bags and film for pouch packaging. To date, this work has led to a 24% reduction in NuPel™ pouch film and a 50% reduction in the inner ply of our aseptic bulk bags. In 2007, our down-gauging efforts resulted in an overall reduction of 340 tons per year of resin consumption, meaning less waste to landfill.
We continue with an active program to evaluate new materials and alternatives for packaging films.
New filling technologies are being designed to deliver performance advantages and sustainability benefits. DuPont Crystalon™ is an innovative packaging system that delivers greater efficiency, flexibility and reduced material consumption and waste by design. It is a fully integrated system that allows packagers to manufacture the bag, apply a fitment and fill the bag in one continuous operation. The bag is formed from a single roll of one-ply film instead of the standard two-ply pre-made bag.
New product development research has targeted significant improvements in the conversion efficiency of energy and raw materials into finished products. This work will help lower energy consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and deliver fully recyclable final products.
