Attention all Owners or Operators of Cooling Systems: HCFC Regulations – Are Your Phase-Out Plans in Place?
All sectors of industry and commerce have a demand for cooling whether for air-conditioning, refrigeration or process cooling applications. Owners and operators of cooling plant will know that these systems are critical to their businesses and require significant capital investments. As regulatory controls increase (for example the phase-out of the use of ozone depleting refrigerants), companies are striving to find a technology that both brings them into compliance with legislation and provides the most efficient solution in terms of cost, and overall energy performance.
From this date forward there will be no further sales of ‘virgin’ HCFCs in the EU. Equipment owners need to plan for transition now, recognising that refrigeration contractors are likely to be increasingly busy as the deadline approaches. Stockpiling of virgin HCFCs will not be possible as the legislation makes the sale and the “use” of these materials for the maintenance of cooling systems, illegal.
Until now, industry has been faced with either the substantial capital cost of replacing serviceable equipment or, at the very least, incurring the cost of lengthy and expensive system conversion (or retrofit) to traditional non-ozone depleting HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) refrigerants.
