Overview

Surge resistors are thick film compositions for application onto ceramic substrates by screen printing and then fired in a conveyor furnace in an oxidizing atmosphere (air) to form specific resistor elements.

Surge resistors are used to protect equipment from voltage pulses or main voltage overload. DuPont resistors are designed to meet industry specifications in lightning pulse and power cross tests.

DuPont has two main materials for surge resistors:

  • Serpentine resistors(Pd/Ag based) - cover the resistivity range from 100 milliohms/square to 3 ohms/square and are most suited to applications requiring firing resistance values below 100 ohms.

  • Block resistors(Ru based) - cover the resistance range above 3 ohms/square and are most suited to applications requiring fired resistance values above 100 ohms.

For optimum performance, surge resistors should be used in combination with a laser-trimmable, high-temperature firing (850°C) encapasulant. Alternatively, lower temperature (600°C) firing encapsulants are available, which are preferred when circuits include ruthenium resistors.
