DuPont Performance Coatings Plays Lead Role in Multi-Stakeholder Project

DuPont Performance Coatings was a lead participant in the successful resolution of a project that demonstrated how a multi-stakeholder approach could solve a chemical product use problem, that neither regulators nor industry was able to solve on their own. Stemming from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) expressed concerns with the ability to calculate isocyanate emissions from paint coatings spray operations, a joint industry-government committee was formed to develop emission factors for automotive spray booth operations. As a Responsible Care® company, DuPont took great interest in this and played a leading role in the project. DuPont’s involvement was spearheaded by  DuPont's Performance Coatings Regulatory Affairs, Refinish Trainer and Coatings Solutions Technologist. DuPont led the strategic design development process for the study, provided DuPont paint for both the DuPont and BASF test facilities and assisted in data assessment and interpretation.

The end result was that the coatings industry now has a much better idea of the environmental impact of its product during the product’s application by customers. The auto body sector has clearer guidance on how to achieve compliance and the MOE will have much better confidence that the auto body shop industry is actually in compliance with the new Regulation 419 for air emissions.
