DuPont Tops BusinessWeek Ranking of 'The Top Green Companies'

DuPont placed first on BusinessWeek’s ranking of ‘The Top Green Companies’, according to a special report in the Dec. 12 edition of the magazine.

The ranking was based on total reduction of greenhouse gases (GHGs), results relative to company revenues, and management’s leadership on environmental issues over the past 10 years. To develop the ranking, BusinessWeek partnered with the Climate Group and Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, a green investment research firm. An independent panel of international judges helped ensure that each of the companies and individuals listed deserves recognition as a leader in greenhouse gas reduction. Others on the list include: BP, Bayer, Alcoa, IBM and 3M.

DuPont’s experience in creating sustainable innovations is recognized in the story: "Back in the mid-1980s, DuPont created a profitable business selling substitute for chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants that were destroying the earth’s protective ozone layer. Turning its attention to climate change was a natural extension of the company’s experience." DuPont Chairman & CEO Charles O. Holliday, Jr. is quoted as saying: "We came to the conclusion that the science was compelling and that action should be taken."

"DuPont is pleased and honored to receive this recognition for the accomplishments we have achieved in the area of sustainable development and delivering environmental innovation over the last two decades," Holliday said. "I am more convinced than ever that sustainable development is not only good for business but also good for the long-term viability of the environment. We will continue to drive sustainable development throughout DuPont."

PLEASE NOTE: DuPont emissions reductions in metric tons totals 65 million, a reduction of 72 percent. The graphic in the BusinessWeek story incorrectly has the total at 11 million metric tons.
