Hsing Ho, Managing Director
Hsing Ho, Managing Director, DuPont Singapore, speaks on the Launch of DuPont ™ Nomex® Garment Launch in Singapore July 10, 2007.
Distinguished customers and guests, ladies and gentleman:
Good morning. Welcome to the DuPont™ Nomex® Garment Launch Seminar.
For years, DuPont has been protecting the safety of our fellow Singaporeans at the Civil Defense Force. The CDF officers wear turnout garments made of Nomex® brand fibre when they fight fire. They protect our properties. DuPont protects their safety. All over the world, more than three million firefighters are protected by turnout gear, stationwear and accessories made of DuPont™ Nomex®.
From media reports, Singapore has a good chance of hosting the F1 Formula car race. F1 Formula car drivers, pit crew members and track officials are wearing apparels made of DuPont™ Nomex® brand fibre. They provide world class sports entertainment to the world. DuPont protects their safety.
Nomex® is an inherently flame-resistant, high-temperature fibre that will not melt, drip or support combustion in air. It also delivers outstanding resistance to a broad range of chemicals and is offered in paper, felt, fabric and fibre forms. I believe most of you, ladies and gentlemen, are familiar with DuPont™ Nomex® as most of you are our valuable customers. I would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest appreciation for your business, and thank you again for joining us today. Your presence and support mean a lot of us.
DuPont introduced Nomex® in 1967. This year marks its 40th anniversary. On this happy occasion, and in line with the DuPont core value on safety, it gives me great pleasure to announce today the launch of DuPont™ Nomex® Garment in Singapore. This new introduction will safeguard people to work safely in the mining, oil and gas drilling, petrochemical and other risk-bearing industries. The garment helps to protect wearers from the heat and flame of a flash fire, and make them feel more secure. With this new line of protective clothing, we wish people can work and go home safely everyday.
Safety has always been a core value at DuPont over our 205 years of history. The world has changed. The market has changed. The business strategy of DuPont has changed. But the safety value at DuPont has never changed. Our commitment to the “Goal is Zero” has not changed. The goal of zero means that we are working toward zero safety incidents everyday.
At a business gathering, a customer once asked me with genuine doubt on his face, “Can DuPont really achieve Zero?” I said to him that in every geography, every country, every business unit, every business sub-unit, every plant site, every joint venture operation, we set our uncompromising target of “zero”. We measure them, we track them. We find root causes and we correct them. We do this day in and day out.
Let me give you an example closer to home. At our Zytel® Plant on Jurong Island, as of June 28, 2007, we have achieved a record of 2,038 injury free days. That means in the last five years, there was Zero injury.
Safety at DuPont not only applies to our own employees but we wish people around the world can work and enjoy their lives safely. It is our commitment to focus on protecting people. Last October, in an announcement on DuPont Sustainability Goals 2015 by our Chairman, Chad Holliday: he said “DuPont will increase the amount of R&D spent on developing and bringing to market new products that will protect people from harm or threats. Between 2006 and 2015, we will introduce 1,000 new products or services that help make people safer globally”. DuPont™ Nomex® Garment is one example.
DuPont has operations in over 70 countries. We have been in Singapore for over 30 years. Our business growth here last year exceeded the GDP growth of Singapore, and we have been expanding in both people and capital investments. Our plant on Jurong Island produces Zytel® nylon 66 engineering resins. We are in the process of building a Vespel® plant in Tuas. We expect to expand our presence on Jurong Island with further investment. Coupled with the strong economic growth of Singapore and a stable government, we are confident that DuPont Singapore will stay on course with steady and positive expansion in the next few years.
Lastly, I would like to thank all of you here to celebrate with us the launch of the DuPont™ Nomex® Garment, manufactured by DuPont, in Singapore. My colleagues will elaborate on our safety commitments, followed by introduction of the new product features. Thank you!
