Interesting Facts about Argentina
Location
- Argentina is the second largest country in South America, and the eighth largest in the world, occupying most of the southern portion of the continent.
- Argentina borders Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay and Chile. The Andes Mountains, on the border with Chile, are the second highest mountain range in the world.
- Due to its unique location and size, nearly every climate can be found in the country.
Government
- The Argentine Constitution established a republic under a representative and federal system, and three separate branches of government -- executive, legislative and judicial.
- Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is the president of Argentina. She is the first woman elected to that position.
Population
- The population of Argentina is about 38 million people.
- About 90 percent of Argentineans are of European ancestry. Waves of immigrants from different European countries (mostly Spain and Italy) arrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- Argentina’s special dance – the tango – is renowned and admired worldwide.
