DuPont Strengthens Efforts in Emerging Markets

At a meeting with investors on Mar. 14, in New York City, DuPont Executive Vice President Ellen Kullman described actions the company is taking in emerging markets.

“A lot of the fundamentals of the marketplace are with us if you look at global trends.”  Ellen said. “We are going to expand markets outside of the U.S. at a much greater rate in a very specific and disciplined way and broaden our addressable markets.”

Ellen described the trends that are driving growth for DuPont:

  • Rapid growth in developing countries;
  • Demand for renewable energy and materials;
  • Demand for greater safety and security; and,
  • The need for increased food production.

DuPont plans to broaden its product portfolios and strengthen its sales efforts in the world’s rapidly growing emerging markets – including Brazil, Russia, India, China and Eastern Europe. In 2007, more than 60 percent of DuPont’s sales were from outside the United States, Ellen said.

In addition to growth in DuPont’s existing businesses, the company also plans targeted acquisitions to contribute to growth.

“Our criteria for acquisitions includes providing market access, adding to our product portfolio, providing access to new technologies or driving productivity,” Ellen said.
