DuPont Sites Reduce Energy Use

This article is one in a series recognizing Energy Efficiency Month.

DuPont sites like the Chambers Works Plant in Deepwater, N.J., are becoming more energy efficient.

DuPont sites worldwide continue to reduce energy use in operations and throughout our customer value chain.  Ten years ago, DuPont established energy goals for 2010 that included maintaining energy use at 1990 levels and obtaining 10% of energy from renewable resources at a cost competitive with the best available fossil fuels.

To date, energy use is down 8% overall in spite of a 40% growth in business. That improvement avoided more than $3 billion in energy costs. Our largest sites have established annual energy reduction goals based on eliminating defects. A few examples follow.

  • At the Chambers Works Plant in Deepwater, N.J., an energy project contributed to the elimination of more than 5,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which is the equivalent of removing more than 934 cars from the roads each year.
  • The Cooper River Plant in Monks Corner, S.C., reduced use of steam and heat transfer fluid, contributing to a 14% reduction in overall plant energy use. It eliminated 2,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to removing more than 440 cars from the road each year.
  • The Edge Moor Plant near Wilmington, Del., eliminated 3,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of removing more than 640 cars from the road each year.
  • The New Johnsonville Plant in New Johnsonville, Tenn., reduced overall plant energy use by 2.4%, eliminating 26,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of removing more than 4,750 cars from the road each year.
