DuPont Continues to Reduce Environmental Footprint
TRI Data For 2003 Shows Steady Decline

WILMINGTON, Del.,  March 30, 2005  —  DuPont decreased its releases of chemicals to air and water listed in the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) by 12 percent in 2003 compared to 2002, according to data provided to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). DuPont reduced total TRI releases 5 percent from 2002. The decrease was due primarily to reducing air and water emissions at the source through energy efficiency efforts and improved process controls. DuPont has reduced its TRI air emissions for 10 consecutive years, a 57 percent decrease since 1995 when 286 new compounds were added to TRI. Water emissions decreased 20 percent in 2003 from the previous year.

Since TRI was first reported in 1987, DuPont has reduced its total TRI releases nearly 78 percent, even though production increased by more than 30 percent.

"We are pleased with our continuing progress in reducing our Toxic Release Inventory and will continue to move toward the ultimate goal of zero waste and emissions," said Linda Fisher, vice president and chief sustainability officer. "These actions support our sustainable growth strategy – the reduction of our environmental footprint and increased use of renewable energy and non-depletable resources to create science-based products and solutions."

DuPont underground injection well disposal increased slightly from 2002, mainly due to higher production rates in 2003.

Off-site transfers of TRI chemicals increased approximately 14 million pounds in 2003, primarily as the result of the shutdown of an on-site incinerator, requiring the waste to be transported to a separate DuPont site for incineration and energy recovery.
