DuPont Statement on Gov. Schwarzenegger’s Climate Change Initiative
WILMINGTON, Del., Jan. 18, 2007 - DuPont today issued the following statement regarding California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's recent climate change initiative. Today Schwarzenegger signed an executive order establishing a first-of-its kind Low Carbon Fuel Standard for transportation fuels sold in California. The statement can be attributed to DuPont Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer Thomas M. Connelly:
"We commend Gov. Schwarzenegger and his administration for taking steps to cost effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation fuels and reduce the global dependence on fossil fuels.
"While we have not yet seen the full details of the Governor's program, we understand the latest component focuses on increasing the proportion of alternative fuels in the transportation fuels pool through a market-based performance standard. DuPont is supportive of policy measures that recognize the benefits of alternative fuels as one step in a suite of actions necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. We also applaud the Governor for harnessing the power of the market to deliver solutions to the problem of climate change. DuPont brings to the market an array of technologies and materials that help our customers and the economy reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are actively researching and developing a suite of advanced, high-performance fuel and other bio-based energy alternatives. These alternatives will expand the fuel options for drivers by introducing new technologies that include advanced biofuels such as biobutanol and ethanol from cellulosic feedstocks.
"We look forward to the opportunity to work with the state of California to develop a plan that leads to market-based solutions that can cost effectively reduce transportation related greenhouse gas emissions, while creating and expanding markets for high-performance biofuels."
DuPont - one of the first companies to publicly establish environmental goals 16 years ago - has broadened its sustainability commitments beyond internal footprint reduction to include market-driven targets for both revenue and research and development investment. The goals are tied directly to business growth, specifically to the development of safer and environmentally improved new products for key global markets.
